Ocean view
Although Los Angeles is right on the Pacific Ocean, there are very few places with a beautiful ocean view. One exception is the High Rooftop Lounge at Hotel Erwin which is certainly worth a visit. After a day at Venice Beach, unwind on the pleasant modern rooftop patio to watch the sunset over the ocean, with views stretching from Point Dume to Palos Verdes. Peruse the High Rooftop Lounge’s creative menu and enjoy a funky cocktail and delicious snack.
Sharing great stories at Bar 1200
Here, lyrics of future hits were scribbled on paper napkins and rock stars poured each other drinks after the 1994 earthquake – Bar 1200, at the Sunset Marquis Hotel, has been the scene of many an interesting story. It may have something to do with the recording studio which is also housed in the hotel. An impressive collection of rock ‘n’ roll photos adorns the walls, and elegant sofas and dark-brown panelling create a chic interior. Although the venue may seem posh, the bar draws a diverse and easy-going crowd. Step out on the patio to enjoy the evening magic that is LA.
At great height
Although the Standard Downtown Hotel LA is indeed pretty standard, its Rooftop Bar is anything but average. This lounge bar has been built around the top floor of the building, and the circular veranda towers high above the city. This popular hotspot offers fabulous views of the downtown skyscrapers. The bar boasts a list of 100 DJs and every day a few of them stop by to spin some tunes. On some nights there are impromptu live performances by famous musicians.
